9th Day of Chinese New Year
As I mention before, everyday of Chinese New Year have different festival to celebrate. In the 9th day of Chinese New Year, many will pray the sky god or "Pai Ti Kong". In Chinese we have different people such as Cantonese, Hockkien, TeoChew, Hakka and others. In the day, Hockkien people will celebrate it because this is their New Year include me because i'm also Hock Kien people.
From the history during the Ming Dynasty, the Southern part of Hock Kien or "FuJian" province was plagued with the Japanese pirate, it is happen in the day before so the Hock Kien folks had to escape the onslaught of these pirates and rain to the deep mountains. They were protected from the attack under the shelter of think bushes of wild sugar-cane plants. When the Japanese pirates had retreated, the folks come out from sugar-cane bushes and that day is 9th of the Chinese New Year so they call this day as birthday of Ti Kong an it was celebrate by Hock Kien people. It is because the sugar cane plant have save the folk then this will venerated during the Pai Ti Kong.
Hock Kien people look important of this day and they will prepare many sacrificial offering to the sky god. They will prepare to pray and buy all the thing. The thing include sugar cane, roast pig, roast duck, roast chicken, sponge cake, red egg, sweet, peanut, fruits and others.
We will start prepare at the night before and then until 12am which reach the 9th day of Chinese New Year then we just start pray and some of them will put firecracker to celebrate. In addition we also will burn then gold paper to pray the god for us to have good fortune the coming year. Here is some of the picture to share when praying this festival.
Others place in Penang also celebrate this festival is because quite a number of Penangite is Hock Kien people. Some of the place are chew jetty, God Temple and all around penang.
